These pests primarily target woody plants, including a wide range of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Common hosts include willow, birch, poplar, alder, and occasionally fruit trees. The life cycle begins when females insert eggs into plant tissues using a saw-like ovipositor. Damage is characterized by irregular or complete defoliation of the host plant. Because the larvae are often gregarious in their early stages, a single colony can strip a branch of its leaves very quickly. This widespread feeding reduces the tree’s energy reserves, stunts growth, and makes the plant more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary infections.

In cases of severe infestation, targeted applications of approved insecticides are recommended.
