How to identify
The Sophora seed chalcid (Bruchophagus sophorae) is a small Hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eurytomidae. These wasps are typically only 2 to 3 mm in length.
The adult insects have a dark, often black, body with a subtle metallic or dull sheen. They possess delicate, transparent wings with a distinct venation pattern characteristic of chalcid wasps.
Larvae are legless, white, and barrel-shaped, perfectly adapted for life inside the hard tissues of a seed. Their mouthparts are designed for consuming the nutrient-rich endosperm.
These insects are highly specialized, having evolved exclusively to inhabit and feed on the seeds of the Sophora tree (Styphnolobium japonicum).
While adults are rarely seen due to their size, their presence is confirmed by identifying the specific damage pattern on the host plant's fruit.
What it damages
The pest specifically targets Styphnolobium japonicum. It does not affect the tree's foliage or wood, but focuses entirely on the reproductive organs, specifically the seeds.
Upon hatching inside the seed, the larva consumes the interior completely. This destroys the embryo, rendering the seed non-viable and worthless for reforestation or nursery production.
Infestation levels can be extreme; in some cases, a single tree can harbor thousands of larvae, with infestation rates in individual pods reaching nearly 100%.
The external appearance of the pod usually remains unchanged, which masks the severity of the internal damage and allows the pest to persist undetected in landscapes.
As a result, seed chalcids significantly impede the natural regeneration of Sophora populations and cause major economic losses in the ornamental plant trade.
When it appears
The lifecycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the Sophora tree. Adults emerge during the tree's flowering phase to locate developing fruit.
Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the young, soft pods. This ensures the developing larvae have immediate access to the necessary food source.
Larval development takes place throughout the summer as the pods mature and harden. The insect passes through several larval stages within the protected environment of the seed.
Overwintering occurs as a mature larva inside the dried seed. They remain in this state through the winter, either within pods hanging on the tree or those that have fallen to the ground.
Pupation occurs in the spring. Once the adult wasp develops, it creates a small exit hole in the seed coat to emerge, thereby starting the new generation cycle.
Signs of infestation
The most reliable sign of a Sophora seed chalcid infestation is the presence of tiny, pin-prick exit holes on the surface of dry, ripened pods in early spring.
Dissecting the pods reveals empty shells where the seeds should be, often accompanied by fine, powdery excrement left behind by the developing larvae.

- Premature fruit drop in early summer.
- Hollow seeds that feel significantly lighter when handled.
- Small, round holes on the surface of overwintered pods.
- Reduced viability of seed batches collected for propagation.
If you observe a high number of small holes on fallen or hanging pods during the winter months, it confirms an established infestation in the area.
Control measures
Sanitation is the most effective control strategy. Collecting and burning or burying fallen pods in late autumn prevents the larvae from completing their development.
In commercial nurseries, systemic insecticide treatments applied during the flowering period can prevent adult wasps from successfully ovipositing into the young pods.
Pruning and removing infested pods remaining on the tree branches is crucial to reduce the overall population density and prevent spreading to healthy trees.
Establishing spatial isolation between young plantings and mature, infested Sophora trees is recommended to keep new crops free of the pest.
Biological control methods are currently limited; therefore, persistent mechanical removal of infested material remains the best practice for home gardens and small nurseries.
