How to identify
Prodecatoma is a genus of insects from the order Hymenoptera, belonging to the family Eurytomidae. Adult specimens are small wasps, typically 2–4 mm in length, often characterized by a dark or black body.
They can be identified by the characteristic structure of the thorax and wing venation, which is typical for members of the Eurytomidae family. Unlike many other parasitic wasps, Prodecatoma larvae develop primarily within plant tissues, leading an endophytic lifestyle.
Females possess a well-developed ovipositor adapted for piercing the hulls of fruits or seeds. Morphological identification of adults usually requires a microscope for precise determination of the species in a laboratory setting.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks the reproductive organs of plants. Its hosts include the seeds of various legumes, as well as the fruits of various shrubs and trees, where the larvae feed and develop.
The damage is caused specifically by the larvae, which consume the internal contents of the seed or the pit of the fruit. This leads to a complete loss of germination potential in seeds and a significant reduction in the commercial quality of the harvest.
Damage often remains hidden until the harvest, making it difficult to detect infestations early. In some cases, infested fruits drop prematurely, leading to additional yield losses in orchards and fields.
When it appears
The life cycle of Prodecatoma is closely linked to the phenology of the host plant. Adults typically emerge in spring or early summer, during the flowering and fruit-set period, which coincides with their egg-laying phase.
Insects most commonly overwinter as larvae inside damaged seeds remaining on the plant or fallen to the ground. Pupation occurs within the food source before the adults emerge.
Depending on regional climatic conditions and the availability of suitable host crop phases, one or two generations may develop per season. Warmer weather promotes a faster completion of the life cycle.
Signs of infestation
The primary sign of infestation is the presence of tiny exit holes on the surface of seeds or fruits, through which the adults emerge after completing their development.
When opening damaged fruits or pods, one can observe a hollowed-out cavity containing a larva or pupa of the pest. Externally, such fruits often appear deformed or underdeveloped.
In fields or orchards, an indirect sign of infestation is massive fruit drop during the active development period. Additionally, one should note any reduction in germination rates for seeds collected from areas where the pest has been detected previously.
Control measures
The most important agrotechnical control method is the thorough removal of plant debris where larvae may overwinter. Destroying fallen fruit and deep autumn plowing significantly reduce the pest population.
Crop rotation is recommended to limit the food supply for the pest over several years. Using high-quality seed material that has undergone phytosanitary control prevents the introduction of the pest into new areas.
In intensive production systems, insecticides may be used during the active flight period of adults to interrupt the egg-laying cycle. However, chemical protection is complicated by the larvae's concealed lifestyle, so the primary focus remains on prevention.
