Scoliid wasps (family Scoliidae) are a group of large, often metallic or brightly colored Hymenoptera. While they are primarily recognized as parasitoids that play a role in natural ecosystem balance, they are frequently encountered by agricultural workers in areas heavily infested with scarab beetle larvae.

The primary hosts for these wasps are the larvae of scarab beetles, including common species such as May beetles, June bugs, and Japanese beetles. These larvae are notorious for damaging the roots of grasses, ornamental shrubs, and vegetable crops, often leading to patchy plant death and stunted growth.
The life cycle of Scoliidae involves specialized search behavior. Female wasps actively hunt for subterranean larvae, using their sensory antennae to locate hosts. Upon finding a grub, the female injects venom to paralyze it and subsequently attaches an egg to the host's body. The developing wasp larva then consumes the host, effectively ending the pest's destructive activity.
The presence of scoliid wasps often signals a high infestation of white grubs in the soil. While they are technically beneficial as biological controllers, their large populations can be alarming. Managing the soil environment to reduce the primary target population (the grubs) is the most effective way to regulate the presence of these wasps.
