Systematic position. Torymidae is a family of parasitic Hymenoptera within the superfamily Chalcidoidea. While the vast majority of these insects function as parasitoids of other insects, a distinct subset of species, particularly those in the Toryminae subfamily, has adapted to a phytophagous lifestyle, positioning them as significant agricultural and forestry pests.

Host crops. These pests primarily target seeds and fruits of various valuable plant species. Significant damage is frequently observed in fruit-bearing trees such as pistachios and chestnuts, as well as in the cones of conifers like spruce and larch. The larvae specialize in feeding on the endosperm or the embryo of the seed, causing severe losses to seed production and nursery stock.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of phytophagous Torymidae is highly specialized and synchronized with the phenology of their host plants. Adult females utilize their elongated ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the developing fruit or seed cone. The larvae remain sequestered inside the seed throughout their development, consuming the interior contents before pupating within the same protective shell.

Damage character and economic impact. The infestation is often insidious, as the outward appearance of the fruit or cone may remain deceptively healthy despite the destruction occurring internally. Once the larvae complete their development, they chew a small exit hole to emerge as adults. This activity reduces the viability of seeds, posing a major threat to commercial forestry and nut orchard operations.

Control measures. Managing Torymidae requires a strategy focused on breaking the life cycle and preventing oviposition. Effective methods include:

  • Strict sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of infested seeds and fallen fruits.
  • Application of systemic insecticides specifically timed to coincide with the emergence of adult wasps.
  • Utilization of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult population density.
  • Introduction of biological control agents that target the larval stages where possible.
