Verticillium wilt

Verticillium spp.

Description

Verticillium wilt is a significant soil-borne disease caused by fungi of the genus Verticillium, primarily V. dahliae and V. albo-atrum. These pathogens invade the plant’s xylem, causing vascular dysfunction and preventing the transport of water and nutrients, which leads to wilting and eventual plant death.

The host range of Verticillium is extensive, affecting a vast number of economic crops, trees, and ornamental plants. Vulnerable species include common garden plants like Dahlia, and major agricultural crops such as Cassava, Banana, Rice, and Cacao. Due to this diversity, the pathogen poses a continuous threat to global food security.

Symptoms typically start with the yellowing of lower leaves, often in a V-shaped pattern, followed by necrosis and leaf curling. As the fungus blocks the vascular tissues, the plant shows signs of flagging, especially during the hottest part of the day. A dark brown or black discoloration within the vascular bundles is a hallmark symptom easily visible upon stem sectioning.

The disease cycle relies heavily on the survival of microsclerotia in the soil, which can persist for several years even in the absence of a host. Infection is triggered by favorable soil temperatures and increased moisture. Factors such as soil compaction, root damage from pests or cultivation, and poor drainage significantly increase the rate of disease spread in a field.

Management of Verticillium wilt is challenging because the pathogen is soil-borne and persistent. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential, including the use of certified disease-free planting stock, solarization to reduce inoculum levels in the soil, and strict crop rotation cycles. Breeding for genetic resistance remains the most effective long-term solution for managing this pathogen.
