These insects act as significant pests for a wide range of plants. They frequently attack woody ornamentals such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and hawthorns, as well as several fruit-bearing trees like pears and apples, affecting both commercial crops and garden landscapes.

The life cycle of lace bugs involves incomplete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as adults in protected areas like plant debris or bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, and the emerging nymphs begin feeding immediately.

The damage caused by lace bugs is primarily cosmetic and physiological. By feeding on leaf sap, they cause a stippling effect—small white or yellow spots—on the upper leaf surface. Heavy infestations can lead to leaf browning, premature leaf drop, and overall reduction in plant vigor.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Cultural practices like removing infested leaf litter are essential to reduce overwintering sites. When infestations are severe, systemic or contact insecticides are applied to the undersides of leaves where these insects reside.
