Cereal flies
Cereal flies are a group of insects belonging to the order Diptera, specifically targeting cereal crops like wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Key species such as the frit fly (Oscinella frit) and Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) are recognized as major agricultural pests globally, causing significant losses in yield and grain quality throughout the growing season.

Cereal flies
These pests primarily damage plants during the seedling and tillering stages. The larvae feed on the central shoot or inside the stem, which leads to the destruction of the growing point. This damage is particularly devastating for young plants, often preventing them from reaching maturity or significantly reducing their ability to produce healthy heads.
The life cycle of cereal flies involves several developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on the leaves or stems of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the plant tissue. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, these insects can complete multiple generations per year, making monitoring and timely control essential.
Field symptoms of infestation include yellowing and wilting of the central leaf, which is often referred to as "dead heart." In later stages, plants may show stunted growth, reduced tillering, or brittle stems that are prone to lodging. The cumulative effect of these injuries results in sparse stands and diminished harvest potential across the affected agricultural area.
Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Recommendations include:
- planting at optimal times to avoid peak fly activity;
- implementing proper crop rotation;
- destroying volunteer cereal plants and weeds;
- performing deep tillage to bury pupae;
- using systemic insecticide seed treatments.
