Systematic position. The family Chyromyidae belongs to the order Diptera (true flies). These are small, yellowish flies that are often associated with various habitats, including agricultural fields. While their role as primary pests is less frequently documented than other Dipterans, they can contribute to crop damage in specific environmental conditions.

Crops affected. Chyromyid flies are known to affect a variety of vegetable crops, especially those grown in high-humidity conditions or in soil with high organic content. They are frequently observed in fields with poor drainage, where they can feed on decomposing plant material and occasionally invade the stem bases and root systems of weakened crops.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit in moist environments rich in organic matter. The larvae are moisture-dependent and develop rapidly, feeding on decaying tissues or the succulent stems of host plants. The presence of multiple generations per season is common, especially in warm and humid climatic conditions.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. Damage occurs when larvae feed on the roots and lower stems, weakening the plant structure. This feeding often facilitates the entry of pathogenic fungi and bacteria, leading to rot and systemic plant failure. The harmfulness is most apparent in young seedlings or crops subjected to stress, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing, and increased mortality rates.
Protection measures. Effective control requires a preventative approach focusing on cultural practices:
- Implement strict crop rotation to disrupt the pest's lifecycle.
- Ensure proper soil drainage to prevent accumulation of excess moisture.
- Remove and destroy all crop residues and organic waste from the field.
- Use physical barriers in greenhouses to prevent adult fly access to young plants.
- Apply targeted soil insecticides only when monitoring confirms high population levels.
