These insects prey on a wide range of soft-bodied agricultural pests. Their primary diet includes aphids, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies, and insect eggs. Because of their dietary versatility, they are found in diverse environments, including orchards, vegetable greenhouses, and field crops, where they actively seek out and consume prey at both larval and adult stages.
The life cycle of the Anthocoridae family typically includes the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, they can complete several generations per year. Adults are highly mobile and capable of flying long distances to locate prey populations, which allows them to colonize new fields effectively as pest outbreaks begin.
The damage they inflict on prey populations is significant, as both nymphs and adults are voracious feeders. They use their rostrum to pierce the body of the prey and extract its fluids. Their efficiency in reducing pest numbers has led to their commercial production and release as a standard method in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs for greenhouses.
Protecting these beneficial insects requires careful pesticide management. Broad-spectrum insecticides can decimate Anthocoridae populations, leading to secondary outbreaks of pests. To promote their presence, farmers are encouraged to minimize chemical interventions and maintain a diversity of plant species, including flowering weeds, which provide alternative food sources such as pollen and nectar.
