Phytopathogenic bacteria are microscopic prokaryotic organisms belonging to the kingdom Bacteria that cause various diseases in plants. Phytopathogenic bacteria

These pathogens trigger a wide range of conditions known as bacterioses. Symptoms include systemic wilting, soft rots of tubers and fruits, leaf spots, tissue necrosis, and abnormal growths such as galls or tumors. Virtually all economically important crops, including solanaceous plants, cereals, and orchard trees, are susceptible to bacterial colonization.

The biology of these pathogens revolves around their ability to exploit entry points like stomata, hydathodes, or wounds created by insects or farming activities. Once inside, they utilize the plant's nutrients to multiply rapidly. Bacteria can overwinter in contaminated seeds, crop residues, soil, or within the bodies of insect vectors, ensuring their presence for the following growing season.

The spread and development of bacterial infections are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Rain splashes and dew droplets are primary vehicles for the transmission of bacterial cells between plants, allowing them to rapidly infect healthy tissues in a field or greenhouse setting.

The economic impact of bacterial diseases is significant, often resulting in total crop failure or severe post-harvest losses. Control strategies focus on preventative measures: using certified pathogen-free seeds, maintaining proper crop rotation, and implementing strict hygiene for tools. Chemical control is limited to copper-based compounds and certain antibiotics where permitted, supplemented by biological control agents.
