Pseudomonas oryzicola

Pseudomonas oryzicola

Description

How to identify

Pseudomonas oryzicola is a Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the Pseudomonadaceae family. It is a specialized plant pathogen responsible for causing bacterial leaf blight and spot symptoms in rice plants.

This pathogen possesses high survival capabilities, remaining viable in infected crop residues, soil, and seeds. Its biological nature allows it to quickly adapt and colonize host tissues, making it a persistent challenge for rice production systems globally.

What it damages

The primary host for this pathogen is rice (Oryza sativa). It predominantly attacks the aerial parts of the plant, including leaf blades and leaf sheaths, compromising the plant's structural and physiological integrity.

The damage caused by P. oryzicola results in significant reductions in photosynthetic capacity and nutrient transport. Infected fields show decreased grain filling, stunted growth, and high yield losses, which can severely impact the profitability of rice farming operations.

When it appears

The infection cycle is most active during the vegetative stages of rice, particularly from tillering to the booting phase. The bacterium thrives under conditions of high humidity and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C.

Rainy weather and wind play a critical role in the dissemination of the pathogen, carrying bacteria from infected plants to healthy ones. Moisture facilitates the entry of the bacteria into plant tissues through natural openings like stomata and hydathodes.

Signs of infestation

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which gradually develop into brown or dark necrotic lesions. A distinct yellowish halo (chlorosis) often develops around the spots.

As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, covering large sections of the leaf surface, which ultimately leads to premature senescence and tissue death. Under high humidity, a bacterial ooze may be visible on the surface of the infected lesions.

Control measures

Management of Pseudomonas oryzicola relies on an integrated approach focusing on prevention and the use of resistant germplasm. Cultural practices are the first line of defense to minimize the disease inoculum in the field.

  • Sourcing and planting certified, disease-free rice seeds.
  • Deep plowing and removal of infected crop residues after harvest.
  • Balanced nitrogen fertilization to prevent overly succulent growth.
  • Application of copper-based bactericides or fungicides during the early onset of infection symptoms.
