Both adult bugs and nymphs feed on the plants, causing damage to the stems and leaves early in the season, and directly attacking the developing grains during the milky and dough stages. This feeding behavior significantly stunts plant growth and reduces the overall harvest volume.

The biological cycle involves adult hibernation in mountain ranges or forest shelters during the winter. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to cereal fields to mate and lay eggs. The larvae pass through five developmental stages (instars) before molting into adults. The synchronization between the insect's development and the host plant's phenology is critical for the pest's survival.

The economic impact of the Sunn pest is largely due to the digestive enzymes injected by the bugs during feeding. These enzymes break down the proteins (gluten) within the wheat kernel. Even a small percentage of infested grains can destroy the baking quality of an entire batch of flour, rendering it useless for commercial bread production due to the degradation of dough structure.
