Calidea is a genus of shield bugs belonging to the family Scutelleridae, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished by an enlarged scutellum that covers the abdomen and wings entirely.
The appearance of these bugs is often striking, featuring rounded or oval bodies with vivid, warning color patterns, commonly displaying combinations of red, orange, black, or metallic blue spots.
Adult insects typically measure between 10 and 15 millimeters in length. Their head is relatively small and closely appressed to the pronotum, creating a streamlined body shape well-suited for maneuvering through dense foliage.
Equipped with piercing-sucking mouthparts, these bugs are specialized for penetrating plant tissues to extract nutrient-rich fluids, which is their primary method of feeding.
Their life cycle involves hemimetabolous development, comprising egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Nymphs of early instars are frequently observed in gregarious clusters, which simplifies detection during field scouting.
What it damages
The primary host plants for Calidea species are members of the Malvaceae family, with cotton being the most significant agricultural target due to the economic losses these insects can inflict.
