Cixiidae is a family of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, specifically the suborder Auchenorrhyncha. These small planthoppers are characterized by a distinct head shape and wings held roof-like over the abdomen. In agriculture, they are significant pests not only due to direct sap-feeding damage but primarily because they serve as essential vectors for various dangerous plant diseases, including phytoplasmas and viruses.

These insects attack a diverse range of crops and wild plants. One of the most notable members of the family is Hyalesthes obsoletus, known for transmitting the stolbur phytoplasma in solanaceous crops. Affected plants typically include grapevines, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and eggplants. Furthermore, wild plants like field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) often act as crucial reservoirs for the pathogens, facilitating the spread to nearby cultivated fields.

The life cycle of cixiids is closely linked to the root system of their hosts. Females lay eggs in the soil or at the base of stems. Nymphs live underground, feeding on root sap, which makes early detection difficult and complicates traditional pest control. Adults migrate to the aerial parts of the plant to feed on phloem sap, during which they transmit pathogens acquired from infected host plants to healthy ones.

Damage caused by cixiids includes direct plant stress due to sap loss, but the secondary effects are far more destructive. Phytoplasma infections lead to severe symptoms such as leaf chlorosis, curling, flower malformation, stunted fruit development, and overall plant decline.
