Host plants: The primary hosts for Dactylopiidae are plants of the genus Opuntia. While they are intentionally introduced in some parts of the world as biocontrol agents to manage invasive prickly pear populations, they are considered major pests in botanical gardens, greenhouses, and private collections where cacti are cultivated for ornamental purposes.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism. Adult females are sessile, protected by a dense, white, cottony waxy secretion that covers their bodies. Males are winged and short-lived, dedicated solely to finding females for mating. Development involves a dispersal phase known as the 'crawler' stage, where the first-instar nymphs actively move to locate fresh feeding sites on the host.

Damage and pest status: Damage is caused by the insects inserting their stylets into the plant tissue to suck sap. This feeding leads to chlorosis, stunting, and localized tissue necrosis. In severe infestations, the white waxy filaments cover the entire surface of the cactus pads, severely weakening the plant and creating entry points for opportunistic fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Protection measures: Managing Dactylopiidae infestations requires a systematic approach. Control strategies include:

  • Application of systemic insecticides that target sap-sucking pests;
  • Use of horticultural oils to suffocate insects by penetrating the waxy covering;
  • Physical removal of colonies using an alcohol-soaked brush;
  • Isolation of infested plants to prevent further spread of crawlers.
