The family Conchaspididae belongs to the superfamily Coccoidea within the order Hemiptera. These scale insects are distinguished from other coccids by the unique structure and shape of their protective tests (scales). While they are less globally studied than diaspids or soft scales, they represent a significant threat to specific tropical and subtropical vegetation.

These pests colonize a diverse range of host plants, including various ornamental, forest, and agricultural species. Common hosts include members of the Rubiaceae, Orchidaceae, and Arecaceae families. They tend to settle in hidden areas such as leaf axils, the underside of leaves, or along the stem, often making early detection challenging for growers.
The life cycle follows a standard hemipteran progression, consisting of egg, mobile crawler (nymph), and sessile adult stages. Once the first-instar nymph finds a suitable site, it inserts its stylets into the plant vascular tissue and initiates the formation of its characteristic test. Adult females are sedentary, while the dispersal of the population relies primarily on the movement of the mobile crawler stage.
The primary damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which results in nutrient depletion and systemic weakness of the host. Infested plants typically exhibit chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the aesthetic and market value of the plant.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the pest cycle and prevent re-infestation. Control measures include:
- Systemic insecticides that travel through the plant's vascular system to reach the feeding insects.
- Horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps applied to smother the sedentary adults.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant segments to reduce population pressure.
- Strict quarantine protocols to prevent the introduction of infested plant material into clean zones.
- Monitoring crawlers using double-sided tape to determine the optimal timing for chemical applications.
