All-Russia Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

Founded in 1931, the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (VILAR) is the leading national center for comprehensive research into medicinal flora. With nearly a century of history, the institute has established itself as the primary authority in Russia for the development, cultivation, and biochemical study of therapeutic, aromatic, and essential oil-bearing plants. Its mission focuses on bridging the gap between fundamental botanical science and industrial-scale pharmaceutical application, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

The institute maintains an extensive geographical footprint, operating research stations and experimental fields across diverse climatic zones to ensure the adaptability and high quality of its genetic resources. VILAR is globally recognized for its rigorous breeding programs and pioneering work in plant chemistry, pharmacology, and botanical conservation. By maintaining vast seed collections and integrating modern biotechnological methods with traditional agronomic practices, the institute serves as a vital pillar in the domestic agro-industrial and pharmaceutical sectors, consistently setting national standards for quality and innovation.
