Excessive soil compaction and high nitrogen levels can create a microclimate favorable for pathogen proliferation. These fungi often persist in the soil for years, waiting for a susceptible host to appear under favorable weather conditions.

The economic impact of plant rots can be devastating, leading to significant yield losses in the field and catastrophic spoilage during post-harvest storage. Effective management strategies involve a holistic approach:
