The lifecycle of the soldier fly encompasses egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in moist environments, such as organic-rich soil or compost. The larvae possess a distinct, dorsoventrally flattened body and are highly resilient to moisture variations. Under favorable conditions, such as warm and humid greenhouses, these larvae can undergo rapid development, potentially increasing in density.

Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage to crops. By consuming roots and basal stems, the larvae disrupt the plant's nutrient and water uptake. This interference results in stunted growth, chlorosis, and the wilting of seedlings. In severe cases, the physical damage to the root collar can lead to the total collapse of the plant population.

The damaged tissue often serves as an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which further complicates the health of the plants. Identifying the presence of soldier fly larvae is crucial, as their activity is frequently correlated with poor drainage, excessive use of organic mulch, or the introduction of non-sterilized growing media into the fields or greenhouses.

Effective management and protection strategies include a focus on sanitation and environment modification:

  • Sterilization of soil and potting mixes prior to planting.
