Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Coelopidae consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female flies lay eggs in moist, decaying organic material. Larvae emerge quickly and feed voraciously on the decomposing tissue. Depending on environmental temperatures, they can complete multiple generations in a single season, especially in humid conditions.

Nature of damage. Larval feeding is characterized by burrowing into the soft tissue of the base of the plant stem or roots. This destruction compromises the structural integrity of the plant and creates entry points for secondary pathogens like bacteria and fungi, which can lead to wilting and death of young vegetable crops.
