The biological cycle of Diopsidae involves the deposition of eggs on the leaves of young rice seedlings. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the plant stem and descend towards the growth point. They feed internally on the central shoot, causing severe disruption to the development of the vegetative parts of the plant.

The hallmark of a Diopsidae infestation is the appearance of 'dead hearts', which occurs when the central tiller of the rice plant dries up and dies due to larval feeding at the base of the shoot. If the infestation occurs during the early stages of plant growth, the impact on final grain yield can be devastating.
