Larvae develop within this decaying material. However, if the environment changes or population density increases, they may invade the base of living plant stems to feed on plant tissue.

Character of damage and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by larvae tunneling into the stems of plants. This feeding activity disrupts the vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients. Infected plants show symptoms of wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the entire plant may collapse, becoming a primary site for secondary fungal infection.

Control measures: The most effective defense against stilt-legged flies is robust sanitation. Growers should promptly remove crop residues from the field and maintain proper irrigation to prevent excessive soil moisture.
