The biology of thick-headed flies is centered on their parasitic behavior. The adults frequent flowers to feed on nectar, where they also hunt for their hosts. They are highly specialized parasitoids, meaning their larvae require a specific host—typically bees, bumblebees, or wasps—to complete their life cycle, which directly affects the stability of local pollinator populations.

The development cycle follows complete metamorphosis. An adult female catches a host insect in flight and deposits an egg into the host's abdomen using a sharp ovipositor. The larva feeds on the host's internal tissues, eventually leading to the host's death. Pupation takes place within the shell of the deceased insect, often overwintering in the soil or protected crevices.

The economic harm caused by Conopidae is indirect but severe. By parasitizing bees, they reduce the density of essential pollinators in agricultural fields.
