These birds primarily target sunflower fields, cereal crops, and fruit orchards. During the early spring, they may feed on the buds of fruit trees, causing long-term damage to the plant's growth. However, the most severe economic impact occurs when large flocks descend upon sunflower fields, systematically feeding on the ripening seeds in the heads.
The biology of finches is characterized by highly adaptive behavior and seasonal flocking. After the breeding season, they congregate in large groups, which increases their foraging pressure on agricultural lands. Their dietary patterns are largely driven by the availability of high-energy foods, leading them to exploit cultivated grains and oilseeds during peak ripeness.
Damage caused by finches includes direct seed loss, which significantly lowers total yield. Furthermore, by pecking at the sunflower heads or cereal ears, they introduce wounds that serve as entry points for fungal pathogens and moisture, leading to rot. This damage reduces the overall quality of the harvested produce, making it unsuitable for market standards.
Effective crop protection requires an integrated approach to discourage the birds from settling in the fields. Commonly used strategies include the installation of bioacoustic devices that mimic predatory bird calls, the use of reflective streamers, and mechanical scaring devices. Additionally, maintaining weed-free field margins reduces the natural cover available for the birds, making the crop area less attractive for congregating.
