The planting scheme should account for the plant's intense lateral growth. The optimal distance between rows is 30–40 cm, with about 20 cm between plants in the row, ensuring sufficient growing space and proper airflow through the planting site.
Under favorable conditions, seedlings appear 7–10 days after sowing. Once the plants reach the stage of 3–4 true leaves, the first thinning should be conducted, leaving only the strongest specimens to eliminate competition for light and nutrients.
Formosan purslane is an annual herbaceous plant from the Portulacaceae family, known for its high adaptability to challenging environments. This crop is highly demanding of light and cannot tolerate shading, so it should be planted in open, sunny locations.
The plant thrives in light, sandy, or loamy soils with good drainage. It reacts very negatively to water stagnation in the root system, which can quickly lead to stem rot and the death of the plants.
In terms of soil fertility, purslane is not considered very demanding, but it responds best to neutral or slightly acidic soils enriched with organic matter. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer application can stimulate vegetative growth at the expense of flowering and flavor quality.
The primary climatic requirement is long daylight hours and high temperatures throughout the entire growing season. The crop possesses pronounced drought resistance due to the succulent properties of its leaves, which store moisture.
During the growth process, the plants require minimal care, consisting mainly of regular weeding and loosening of the soil between rows. Although purslane is drought-resistant, moderate irrigation during active growth allows for more tender greens suitable for culinary use.
The yield of Formosan purslane depends on planting density and agricultural practices. With proper irrigation management and timely soil cultivation, one can expect the formation of significant vegetative biomass throughout the entire summer.
Mass harvesting of the greens can begin as early as 40–50 days after full emergence. An important aspect is the plant's ability to regenerate after side shoots are cut, allowing for multiple harvests within a single growing season.
To increase yield, it is recommended to prune the tips of the stems, which stimulates branching and increases total biomass volume. The more side shoots a plant forms, the higher the total output per unit area will be.
Productivity metrics also depend on specific varieties and the soil fertility level. In sufficiently fertile soils with regular care, the yield of marketable greens can reach up to 1–2 kg per square meter per growth cycle.
It should be noted that flowering reduces the quality of the greens, making them coarser. Therefore, for commercial purposes, the main crop should be harvested before the onset of mass flowering, ensuring the collection of the highest quality produce.
Formosan purslane is highly resistant to many diseases, however, if agricultural practices are neglected, particularly regarding soil moisture, it may become susceptible to fungal infections. Root rot is the most common issue caused by water stagnation.
Among pests, aphids may occasionally be observed on purslane plantings, sucking sap from young stems and leaves. Affected areas become deformed, which negatively impacts the plant's marketability and its growth rate.
Slugs and snails can also pose a serious threat to young seedlings during periods of high humidity. These pests are capable of completely destroying young plants, so preventative management must be implemented early in the growth stage.
Fungal leaf spots can manifest under conditions of high air humidity and poor airflow between rows. The best prevention for these diseases is maintaining proper planting spacing, which ensures ventilation for every individual plant in the row.
Chemical control methods are rarely used for this crop as it rapidly accumulates substances in the leaves. Preference is given to agrotechnical methods, including proper watering, timely weeding, and the removal of plant debris from the plot.
Harvesting Formosan purslane is carried out selectively as stems reach a marketable length of 15–20 cm. It is recommended to perform the cutting in the early morning hours, while the plants maintain maximum turgor and freshness after the cool night.
When cutting, it is important to leave the lower part of the stem with several leaves to facilitate regrowth. This allows for the continued use of a single planting area for up to two or three months, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce.
The harvested greens must be immediately moved to a shaded, cool location, as they wilt quickly under direct sunlight. In industrial conditions, produce is cooled immediately after harvest to extend shelf life for several days.
For long-term use, purslane can be lightly heat-treated or preserved, although it is most popular in its fresh form as a salad green. The plant's leaves are rich in beneficial microelements and vitamins.
During harvest, it is important to discard all damaged or diseased specimens so they do not degrade the overall quality of the batch. Cleanliness of the produce is a key requirement, so the greens are carefully rinsed of soil residues before packaging if necessary.
