Originating from regions across North Africa and Western Asia, purslane has naturalized in many parts of the globe. It is cultivated commercially and in private gardens, often utilized as a high-value microgreen or baby leaf crop that provides a quick harvest during the summer months.
The plant is characterized by its fleshy, smooth, reddish-green stems and succulent, obovate leaves. Purslane is highly efficient in its use of water due to its crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) pathway, allowing it to survive in challenging, low-water environments where other leafy greens would fail.
Optimal cultivation requires full sun exposure and warm temperatures, with a minimum requirement of 20°C for consistent germination. It prefers well-drained, fertile sandy or loamy soils. Agronomic practices focus on preventing weed competition in the early stages and maintaining sufficient soil moisture for maximum leaf development.
Purslane is utilized in salads, soups, and as a fermented vegetable, celebrated for its high omega-3 fatty acid and antioxidant content. While it is generally robust, it can be susceptible to soil-borne pathogens if grown in waterlogged conditions and may attract aphids. Proper soil management and crop rotation are standard strategies to mitigate these risks.
