How to identify
The Fir seed wasp, Megastigmus pinsapinis, belongs to the family Torymidae within the order Hymenoptera. It is a specialized chalcid wasp that develops internally within the seeds of fir species.
The adult insect is small, measuring between 3 and 5 mm in length. It features a slender body, typically brown or yellowish, with clear, transparent wings showing specific vein patterns typical for this genus.
The larvae are white, legless, and spend their entire developmental period inside the seed coat, consuming the endosperm and embryo. This hidden existence makes them difficult to detect without opening the seeds.
