They predominantly target high-value orchard species such as apple, pear, and cherry trees. The damage is most frequently observed in mature orchards where wood-boring beetle populations are present, or during spring seasons when woodpeckers utilize tree sap as a primary carbohydrate source, causing severe stress to the vascular system of the host plant.
The biology of Picidae is specialized for drilling and foraging. Their life cycle involves high-energy consumption, driving them to peck into healthy wood to expose galleries of wood-boring larvae or to create 'sap wells'. These activities occur throughout the year, but are particularly damaging during the onset of the growth season.
The primary form of damage is 'girdling' or the creation of deep, clustered holes that sever the cambium layer. This disrupts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients. Furthermore, these open wounds expose the heartwood to fungal pathogens and wood-rotting bacteria, which accelerate the decay of the trunk and reduce the lifespan of the orchard.
Protection measures should be integrated into the standard orchard management plan. Key strategies include:
- Deployment of acoustic bird scaring devices (predator calls).
- Use of visual deterrents like reflective tape or hawk silhouettes.
- Rigorous pest control programs to minimize populations of wood-boring beetles, thereby removing the primary attractant.
- Application of grafting wax or tree paint to seal and protect fresh drilling injuries.
