These insects are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a vast array of host plants. Their diet includes fruit trees, vineyards, ornamental shrubs, and vegetable crops. The biological cycle of Flatidae consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in bark or plant tissue. Once hatched, nymphs produce a waxy, white, flocculent substance for protection, which often covers the infested stems. This feeding process drains the plant's vital resources, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and fruits in a black, powdery substance, thereby severely reducing the market value of the produce.
