From a botanical perspective, palms are defined by their unbranched, erect or creeping stems capped by a crown of large, evergreen leaves that are either pinnate or palmate. Their root system is fibrous and adventitious, spreading widely through the soil profile to maximize nutrient and water uptake, which is a critical adaptation for survival in diverse tropical soil types.
