The host range of whiteflies is extremely broad, encompassing numerous horticultural, ornamental, and field crops. In agricultural settings, they are particularly problematic in greenhouses where they attack tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various ornamental flowers. They thrive in warm, humid environments, which are characteristic of many protected cultivation systems.

The life cycle of the whitefly consists of egg, nymphal stages (often referred to as 'crawlers'), pupae, and adults. The nymphs are the primary feeding stage, piercing the leaf tissue with their specialized mouthparts to extract plant sap. Due to high reproductive rates and continuous breeding cycles in temperature-controlled environments, a single infestation can escalate into a major outbreak within days.

Direct damage is caused by the depletion of nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and general plant decline. Indirectly, whiteflies excrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which encourages the growth of sooty mold, preventing photosynthesis. Perhaps most dangerously, they act as vectors for various plant viruses, which can lead to severe crop losses and irreversible damage.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include the use of yellow sticky traps for monitoring, maintaining high sanitation standards, and the introduction of biological control agents like Encarsia formosa. Chemical control involves the use of systemic and contact insecticides, ensuring a rotation of chemical groups to manage resistance. Long-term success relies on combining these methods with regular scouting and environmental manipulation.
