The family Psychidae, commonly known as bagworm moths, belongs to the order Lepidoptera. The most distinctive feature of this family is that the larvae build portable protective cases (bags) made of silk, twigs, leaf fragments, and soil particles. They spend their entire larval stage and pupate within this camouflaged structure, which provides significant defense against predators and environmental stress.

These pests target a wide range of host plants, including fruit trees, shade trees, shrubs, and various coniferous species. In managed landscapes and orchards, bagworms can cause severe economic damage by defoliating branches. Persistent feeding reduces the tree's vigor, making it more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stressors like drought or winter injury.
The life cycle of the Psychidae consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. In many species, adult females are wingless and never leave their protective cases, making early detection extremely difficult. Dispersal primarily occurs during the early larval stage when tiny larvae produce silk threads to balloon on the wind, allowing them to infest nearby vegetation.
The visual signs of damage include partially eaten leaves or skeletonized foliage, often accompanied by the presence of dangling, spindle-shaped bags on the branches. Because the larvae incorporate material from the host plant into their cases, they are expert at blending in with the environment, which often leads to the infestation going unnoticed until significant damage is already present.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include:
- Hand-picking and burning the cases during the dormant season.
- Applying insecticides, such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), when larvae are small and actively feeding.
- Monitoring for early-season larval activity through regular tree inspections.
- Promoting healthy tree growth to improve natural resistance to minor infestations.
