The Loranthaceae family comprises a diverse group of hemiparasitic plants that obtain water and minerals from their host trees. Unlike autotrophic crops, they have evolved specialized structures known as haustoria to penetrate the host's xylem. While scientifically fascinating, in an agricultural context, they are classified as significant pests that jeopardize the health and productivity of fruit orchards and forestry plantations.

Originating primarily from tropical and subtropical regions, these plants have a global distribution. Their ability to colonize a wide range of host species allows them to thrive in various climatic zones. By tapping into the vascular system of the host, they bypass the need for traditional soil-based nutrient uptake, making them highly resilient in diverse ecological conditions.

Botanically, they are characterized by evergreen, leathery leaves and distinctive floral structures often pollinated by birds. The seeds are enclosed in a sticky pulp called viscin, which ensures that they adhere to branches after being deposited by avian vectors. This efficient dispersal mechanism explains the rapid colonization rates observed in managed orchards and forested areas.

There is no specific "cultivation" process for Loranthaceae in agriculture; instead, management practices are focused on containment and eradication. Healthy, well-maintained trees are less susceptible to initial infestation. Regular canopy inspections are essential, and the primary control method involves pruning affected branches well below the site of attachment to prevent regrowth from the haustoria.

The economic impact of this family is largely negative, as heavy infestations reduce the vigor of the host plant, resulting in diminished fruit yields and poor quality of timber. In severe cases, the host tree suffers from stress, stunted growth, and eventual mortality. While some species possess minor medicinal or ornamental interest, their status as agricultural pests remains the primary focus for professional agronomists.
