Dendrophthoe is a genus of hemiparasitic plants belonging to the Loranthaceae family. These plants are known for their epiphytic growth habit, attaching themselves to the branches of host trees and extracting water and nutrients to supplement their own photosynthetic production.
The genus is predominantly native to tropical and subtropical regions across Asia, Africa, and Australia. While not cultivated as agricultural crops, these plants play a significant role in forest biodiversity, though they are often managed as pests in orchard settings.
Structurally, Dendrophthoe plants utilize specialized root-like organs called haustoria. These structures penetrate the bark of the host plant to tap into the xylem, allowing for the direct absorption of fluids, which is essential for the parasite’s survival in diverse forest environments.
The botanical characteristics of the genus include thick, coriaceous leaves and tubular, brightly colored flowers. These floral structures are specifically evolved to attract avian pollinators, such as sunbirds, which facilitate cross-pollination across the canopy.
Growth requirements are primarily focused on the availability of suitable host species and high-humidity climates. Dendrophthoe thrives in environments where sunlight exposure is sufficient for photosynthesis, making the outer branches of trees an ideal habitat for colonization.

Dissemination is largely mediated by birds that consume the sticky, berry-like fruits. Once excreted, the seeds adhere to the bark of trees, germinating and creating new points of infestation, which makes controlling the spread a constant challenge in tropical regions.
There are no broad-spectrum chemical treatments safe enough to eliminate Dendrophthoe without harming the host tree. Consequently, integrated management relies on cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy tree stands and immediate removal of any detected parasitic seedlings.
Early detection is vital for controlling infestations. Monitoring should be integrated into standard orchard maintenance schedules, focusing on areas where bird activity is high, to address the presence of the parasite before it reaches a size that severely impacts the host.
