The species is native to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, including Nepal, Sikkim, and Tibet. It is naturally adapted to rugged, mountainous landscapes with significant annual precipitation and mist.
Success in cultivation depends on mimicking its natural soil conditions. The plant strictly requires acidic soil with a pH range of 4.5 to 5.5, rich in organic matter such as peat or leaf mold, and excellent drainage.
Climate requirements include protection from scorching afternoon sun and high-velocity winds. These shrubs perform best in locations with cool summers, high atmospheric humidity, and consistent soil moisture.
Regular mulching is recommended to insulate roots against temperature fluctuations and to preserve moisture. Due to its alpine origin, it does not tolerate hot, arid climates or prolonged periods of drought.
Root rot, particularly caused by Phytophthora species, is the most lethal threat. It is almost always a result of poor soil drainage and stagnant water around the root zone.
