The plant is characterized by its prostrate habit and needle-like, glossy leaves that remain green throughout the year. Its most notable feature is the pendant, bell-shaped flowers, which emerge in spring or early summer in shades ranging from cream to soft yellow.

Cultivation of this species requires strict adherence to soil conditions. It demands a highly acidic, well-draining substrate rich in peat moss and organic matter. Neutral or alkaline soils are detrimental to the plant's health and will inevitably lead to decline.

Placement in the landscape should mimic its natural habitat. It thrives in locations that offer partial shade or protected positions where it is sheltered from the harsh intensity of direct midday sun, while still receiving good ambient light.

Water management is critical. The soil must remain consistently moist but never saturated. In agricultural or horticultural settings, this often necessitates the use of rainwater and elevated garden beds to ensure optimal moisture regulation and drainage.

Phytophthora and other soil-borne fungi are the most severe threats to the plant, primarily occurring due to poor drainage and compacted soil. These pathogens target the root system, causing rapid wilting and eventual death of the shrub.

Iron chlorosis is a common physiological disorder observed when the pH levels of the growing medium rise above the preferred acidic range. The leaves turn yellow while the veins remain green, signaling a need for immediate corrective action.

Spider mites can become a nuisance during hot, dry spells. They thrive in dry conditions and can cause significant damage to the foliage, necessitating regular misting or the use of targeted acaricides if infestations occur.

Over-mulching around the base of the plant can create an environment conducive to rot. It is recommended to use coarse pine bark or needles to maintain soil moisture without burying the crown, which facilitates better airflow.

Extreme winter temperature fluctuations in the absence of snow cover may cause frost heave, exposing roots to dry, freezing winds. Providing a protective layer of evergreen boughs can help stabilize the soil environment during dormant periods.
