Sudan grass "Novosibirskaya 84" is a sorghum-sudan hybrid (Sorghum x drummondii) obtained by recurrent selection in mutant offspring of the Kinel'skoe 3 and Brodskaya 2 varieties. The plant has an erect stem, up to 300 cm in height, with a smooth cylindrical stem covered with a weak waxy bloom. During maturation, the plant takes on a straw color, and the nodes are dark-green.
The leaves are broad-linear, up to 60 cm long and 4.5 cm wide, juicy with a light waxy coating. Bushiness is moderate – from 2 to 15 productive stems. Foliation is uniform: 44% (comparatively 40% for Novosibirskaya 84 and 32% for Kinel'skaya 100). Protein content in green mass is 11.8%. The mass of 1000 seeds is 16–17 g.
The vegetative period from germination to maturation lasts about 100 days. Green mass yield in the first cut reaches 273 c/ha (up to 440), in the second – 100 c/ha (up to 130); total yield for two cuts is 373 c/ha, which is higher than the standard indicators of Novosibirskaya 84. Seed yield is 27 c/ha, 2 c/ha higher than Novosibirskaya 84 and 6 c/ha higher than Kinel'skaya 100.
The variety is drought-resistant, resistant to spring frost return, and also to powdery smut. It does not lodge and is suitable for mechanized harvesting. It is affected weakly by helminthosporiosis and bacteriosis. Recommended for cultivation in southern forest-steppe and steppe zones of the West Siberian region.
