Description 90098
Sudan Grass (Sorghum Drummondii) – an annual grass belonging to the family Gramineae. Tall (up to 250 cm), it has a deep root system that ensures high drought resistance and rapid recovery after mowing. Thanks to these properties, it can be harvested several times per season – usually 2–4 cuts, and under optimal conditions even up to 5.

The fodder quality of Sudan grass is high: green mass contains a significant amount of proteins (approximately 22% of dry matter), sugars, ash, vitamins, and minerals. This makes it attractive for cows, horses, sheep, and other livestock. The grass is used as fresh feed, as well as prepared for silage or hay – from one hectare, over 1000 centners of green mass can be obtained.

Sudan grass is grown both as a pure sown crop and in mixtures with legumes (clover, peas, lupine), corn, or sunflower. In such crop rotations, it ensures a high yield – 60–80 tons/hectare of green mass and 10–12 tons/hectare of hay. The grass is also valuable in green conveyor systems, where it is used to create annual pastures that withstand several grazings per year.

The vegetation period lasts up to 120 days; the first cut is made 65–70 days after sowing, the second – 40–45 days, the third – 30 days. The recommended mowing height is 6–8 cm. Sudan grass is characterized by high productivity, nutritional value, and versatility in use as a fodder crop.
