Fescue Mila

Technical Profile: Fescue 'Mila'

Developed by the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center and the Komi Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 'Mila' is a fescue variety engineered specifically for professional landscaping. The breeding focus was on maintaining plant density and structural integrity throughout the growing season.

Morphology and Growth Habits

• Stature: The plant maintains a compact height of 20–40 cm. This narrow range is a key feature for landscape architects who require predictable vertical layers in flowerbeds or rock gardens without the need for frequent pruning.
• Foliage Texture: The characteristic grey-green color is the result of a specialized waxy cuticle. This coating is not merely aesthetic; it serves as a physiological adaptation, reducing transpiration rates and enhancing the plant's resilience during dry spells.

Practical Application in Landscape Design

The primary advantage of the 'Mila' variety lies in its growth uniformity. Unlike wild fescue types, this cultivar offers a high level of consistency across the planting, ensuring a seamless carpet effect. The plant exhibits a measured rate of biomass accumulation, which prevents it from encroaching on neighboring decorative elements. This slow growth habit maintains the intended design geometry for several seasons. Furthermore, the genetic background of Ural breeding ensures superior cold resistance, allowing the root system to survive sub-zero soil temperatures. 'Mila' is thus a reliable, low-maintenance component for professional greening in temperate and continental climates.
