Wheat KWS Carusum

German breeding for a stable harvest

The spring wheat variety 'KWS Carusum' is the result of years of research by KWS, aimed at developing a high-yielding variety capable of adapting to intensive farming conditions. This German-bred variety occupies a solid niche in the market for crops requiring effective protection against fungal pathogens, all while maintaining high grain quality standards.

Phytosanitary profile and development

A key feature of 'KWS Carusum' is its genetic resistance to the most dangerous diseases that typically reduce production profitability. KWS breeders focused on the following defensive factors:

• A high barrier against yellow rust, which is critical in high-humidity spring and summer periods.
• Increased resistance to fusarium head blight, minimizing the risk of mycotoxin accumulation.
• Comprehensive immunity against powdery mildew.

The plants reach a moderate height of 90–100 cm, which facilitates agrotechnical management despite their moderate resistance to lodging. This requires agronomists to strictly adhere to seeding rates and use growth regulators, especially on highly productive soils.

Agronomic aspects

The grain of this variety has specific characteristics, with a thousand-grain weight (TGW) of less than 30 grams. This directly impacts planting strategy: seeding density must be adjusted to account for the smaller seed size to ensure optimal plant stand formation. Investing in 'KWS Carusum' seed is justified where high field phytosanitary status and predictable crop development are top priorities, even in the variable European climate.
