SVERDLOVSKY 38 is a variety of brome grass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) bred by the Ural State Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture (Sverdlovsk Region) through mass selection from local wild-growing material. The plant is characterized by an upright, medium-density bushiness and a height of up to 140–150 cm. Stems are rounded, medium coarseness, without pubescence; leaves are linear-lanceolate, dark green, without pubescence, with good foliation (about 47 %). The inflorescence is a drooping panicle, fruits are dark gray. Seeds are lanceolate, brown; the mass of 1000 seeds is 2.9–3.5 g.
The variety is distinguished by high resistance to adverse climatic conditions: good winter hardiness and drought resistance, as well as absence of disease and pest damage. The vegetative period lasts from the beginning of spring growth to the first mowing 50–60 days, and to seed maturity – 98–115 days.
Yield of dry matter for SVERDLOVSKY 38 is in the range of 35–45 c/ha, while seed yield reaches 4–6 c/ha. In various growing regions, higher indicators are noted: in the North Caucasus region, the average yield of dry matter is 36.8 c/ha, and in the Central region – 50.5 c/ha, which is higher than the standard average. The variety is widely permitted for cultivation in several regions, including the Northwestern, Central, Volga-Vyatka and others.
SVERDLOVSKY 38 represents a reliable and productive crop suitable both for hay production and seed collection. Its resistance to climatic stresses and diseases makes it an attractive choice for farmers seeking to ensure a stable yield under diverse agro-technical conditions.
