The reed oats «Velmoza» is a perennial herbaceous plant of the oat grass family, possessing a hexaploid genome and an average height of 80 to 120 cm. Leaves are green in the first year of sowing, of medium width, with a linear shape, sometimes slightly rough surface, which reduces water evaporation and increases drought resistance. In the first year of growth, the tendency to form inflorescences is weak, while in the second year it is moderate; the time of flowering occurs during the second year. The bush (root) is semi-upright, the plant is of medium height at flowering, the flag leaf is of medium length and width, the stem and inflorescence are also of medium size, the upper internode is short - of medium length.
The variety «Velmoza» is characterized by high fodder productivity: green mass reaches 150–200 c/ha, dry matter – 70–90 c/ha. It is resistant to drought, rust and shows moderate resistance to diseases such as plant rot, soil infections, blight and downy mildew. In addition, the plant withstands pests well – rodents, Colorado beetles and flies. Thanks to these characteristics, «Velmoza» is suitable for cultivation both on open pastures and in lawn systems.
For landscape design, reed oats are valued for dense turf that create durable lawns, borders, and alpine gardens. The plant cannot tolerate waterlogging, so well-drained soil without stagnation is required. Care includes the removal of dry leaves, pruning of inflorescences, and replanting every 2-3 years. Thanks to its winter hardiness (30-35 days) and resistance to cold, «Velmoza» grows successfully in northern and southern regions, providing a decorative appearance and functionality under various climatic conditions.
