Orchard Grass GENRA

A Selection Breakthrough in Ornamental Botany from SKFNAZ

The 'Genra' cultivar, developed by experts at the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution 'North Caucasian Federal Agricultural Research Center' (SKFNAZ), is a specialized solution for ornamental landscaping. Unlike forage analogues of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata), this variety has been selectively bred to ensure landscape aesthetic appeal and resistance to the specific operational conditions required for ornamental sites.

Technological Features and Plant Architecture

The primary engineering challenge addressed by breeders V.V. Chumakova and G.G. Gonyan involved modifying the plant's habit. 'Genra' demonstrates balanced tillering and controlled height of generative shoots. This is critical for maintaining the decorative look of a lawn: the crop does not 'clump' out of the general turf, a common issue with wild or non-specialized forms of orchard grass.

• Turf Density: The cultivar forms a dense sod that prevents weed invasion and exhibits high resistance to trampling, making it an excellent choice for areas with moderate recreational use.
• Phenological Stability: The genetic code of 'Genra' ensures uniform coloration of leaf blades throughout the entire growing season. This prevents 'patchiness' in the lawn when temperatures or soil moisture levels fluctuate.
• Adaptability: The development by SKFNAZ takes into account the climatic specifics of the North Caucasus region, ensuring the plant's viability during sharp temperature shifts.

The practical value of 'Genra' lies in its combination of the biological hardiness of a perennial grass with the aesthetic requirements of urban and private landscaping. With proper care, the cultivar forms a smooth, dense coverage that requires minimal maintenance intervention.
