When grown in a field environment, it is essential to manage weed pressure, especially in the first year of growth, as the young rosettes can be easily suppressed by vigorous perennial weeds.
Fungal pathogens represent the most significant threat to the crop, particularly powdery mildew and various leaf spot diseases that manifest when humidity levels are consistently high.
Root rot, driven by moisture-related issues, remains a primary concern for growers. Ensuring proper site drainage is the single most effective way to prevent these soil-borne fungal infections.
Insects like aphids can cause considerable damage by colonizing the developing flower stalks, which leads to stunted growth, flower deformation, and general plant weakening.
Weevils may also attack the plant, targeting both the foliage and the root base. Regular scouting of the field is necessary to identify infestations before they cause irreversible structural damage.
To maintain plant health, growers should practice crop rotation and avoid planting in locations previously occupied by other members of the Scrophulariaceae family to break the disease cycle.
