Native to North America, specifically western regions, it has adapted to environments where host shrubs are abundant. It relies entirely on the host for survival after the initial stage of germination, making it a highly specialized parasite.

Botanical propagation occurs primarily through seeds. These seeds are remarkably resilient, capable of remaining dormant in the soil for years while maintaining viability, which facilitates their spread through soil movement and contaminated plant materials.

The environmental requirements for germination are minimal, requiring only adequate moisture and the presence of a suitable host plant in the immediate vicinity. Once a seedling connects to a host, it detaches from the soil entirely, becoming a complete parasite.

Ceanothus dodder is considered a serious quarantine pest. Its presence significantly compromises the vigor and health of host plants, leading to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and, in severe cases, the death of the host.
