Knotweed

Description

How to tell it apart

Knotweed (Polygonum) is a large genus of annual and perennial plants belonging to the Polygonaceae family. In agricultural settings, common species include Polygonum aviculare and Polygonum convolvulus.

The primary diagnostic feature is the presence of an ochrea — a papery sheath surrounding the stem at the leaf node. The stems can be erect, prostrate, or climbing, depending on the species.

Leaves are generally alternate and entire, often featuring a distinct dark spot on the leaf blade, particularly in certain varieties, which serves as a helpful identifier.

The flowers are small, arranged in spike-like or raceme clusters, and typically white, pink, or greenish in color, producing prolific quantities of seeds.

The root system is highly adaptable, often being taprooted and deep, allowing the plant to survive in diverse soil types and environmental conditions.

Where it grows

Knotweed is a widespread ruderal and agricultural weed found in various habitats, including fields, gardens, roadsides, and disturbed ground.

It poses a significant problem in row crops, cereals, and vegetable production. It thrives particularly well in nitrogen-rich and moist soils.

Due to its rapid growth, it quickly establishes itself in field gaps, outcompeting young crop plants for sunlight and essential minerals.

Climbing species, such as black bindweed, can entwine around crop stems, increasing the risk of crop lodging and making mechanical harvesting difficult.

Knotweed is known for its ecological plasticity, enabling it to colonize everything from heavy clay soils to loose sandy loams.

Harm it causes

The primary damage caused by knotweed is the intense competition for soil moisture, nutrients, and sunlight, which significantly stunts the development of crops.

In cereal crops, heavy infestation can reduce overall yield by suppressing the tillering process and creating a competitive canopy above the crop.

Seed contamination is a major issue; knotweed seeds are often similar in size to crop seeds, requiring rigorous cleaning processes after harvest to meet quality standards.

The dense foliage of this weed can create humid microclimates within the field, promoting the spread of fungal diseases among the cash crops.

Furthermore, knotweed can serve as an alternate host for various pests and pathogens, maintaining their populations on the field throughout the growing season.

How to control

Effective management of knotweed requires a combination of good agricultural practices and timely chemical interventions.

Cultural methods, such as deep plowing with soil inversion, are essential to bury weed seeds deep enough to prevent successful germination in subsequent seasons.

In row-cropped fields, mechanical inter-row cultivation is highly effective for removing knotweed seedlings before they establish a deep root system.

Chemical control involving selective herbicides is a key tool, especially when applied at early growth stages before the weed produces seeds.

  • Crop rotation to break the weed life cycle.
  • Post-emergence harrowing to disturb young weeds.
  • Use of clean, certified seeds to prevent introduction.
  • Systemic herbicides targeting broadleaf weeds.
