KURANT

Kurant is a type of hard winter wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) intended for producing high-quality grain used in the manufacture of pasta and cereal products. This mid-early semi-dwarf variety is characterized by a short plant of medium height, ranging from 61 to 86 cm, and a vegetative period from 236 to 279 days. Kurant has good winter hardiness and drought resistance, which are at or above standard levels, as well as high resistance to lodging, which contributes to a stable yield even in complex climatic conditions. The variety is recommended for cultivation in various zones of Rostov Region and Krasnodar Krai, where it demonstrates a medium yield from 34 to 47.1 c/ha. The mass of 1000 grains is 36-44 g, which corresponds to the requirements of GOST for hard wheat. Kurant has good pasta qualities, which makes it in demand for the food industry. Meanwhile, the variety is moderately resistant to brown rust but susceptible to solid loose smut, which requires attention during agrotechnical measures. Studies on crossing the Kurant variety with durum wheat showed the possibility of significantly increasing productivity. In the third and fourth generations of hybrids, forms were obtained with an increased grain mass by 30% per ear compared to the original variety. This confirms the prospects of using Kurant in breeding work to create more high-yielding and adapted to growing conditions genotypes.
