Sea buckthorn 'Otradnaya' is a fruit tree developed at the Botanical Garden of MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov and accepted for state variety testing in 1980. The variety belongs to the northwestern and central regions of Russia, where it grows successfully in the Ivanovo, Moscow, Tver, Kostroma, and Yaroslavl regions.
The 'Otradnaya' bush is characterized by vigorous growth with a compressed pyramidal crown and a small number of thorns. The fruits are large – mass about 0.63 g, round-peach shape, orange-red color, with a shiny medium-thickness skin. The taste is sour with a light aroma, and the vitamin C content reaches 176 mg/100 g, making the berries a valuable source of antioxidants.
The yield of the plant is high: in 7–8-year-old bushes up to 8.5 kg/bush (average yield 1.5 kg/m²). The fruits ripen in mid-August, and the beginning of fruiting starts with the third-fifth year. The variety is resistant to frost and diseases, prefers neutral soil (pH 6.5–7) – loamy-sand, loam/clay, chernozem. Thanks to these characteristics, 'Otradnaya' is a reliable choice for gardeners who want to get a rich harvest of useful berries in a temperate climate.
