Onion Contado

Technological potential of Contado: precision farming

The Contado onion from the Israeli breeding company Hazera is a balanced salad-type hybrid focused on producing early marketable yields. The breeders' technical approach is centered on a shortened vegetation period: the maturity takes up to 90 days, making it a strategic tool for those aiming to supply the market with fresh onions by mid-summer.

Morphological features and marketability

The biological design of this hybrid is optimized to ensure a high percentage of marketable produce:

• Bulb geometry: the combination of round and elliptical shapes allows the bulbs to be packed efficiently, minimizing gaps and ensuring optimal density during transit.
• Protective traits: the bronze-yellow skin color is not merely aesthetic but the result of tightly adhering scales that shield the bulb from mechanical damage and excessive moisture loss.

In practical terms, this means growers receive predictable yields with minimal culling rates. Despite its salad-type classification, Contado possesses sufficient tissue density for mid-term storage: 3–4 months is a solid performance for an early-maturing hybrid, allowing for flexible marketing windows immediately after harvest.

Practical takeaways for the agronomist

Choosing Contado is justified if your strategy centers on early harvest and rapid turnover. The hybrid is less sensitive to long-day conditions compared to late-maturing varieties, allowing for successful cultivation across diverse climatic zones. With proper nitrogen management during the initial growth stages, the yield potential is fully unlocked, delivering the bulb sizes highly sought after in retail sectors.
